2015 vs. 2017 – The Similarities are Uncanny

Before we get into the actual dynamics of this Thursday’s game, there’s a post here that needs to be written. In doing some thinking and digging during the first 24 hours since we found out Xavier would be playing Maryland on Thursday, I noticed some incredible similarities between that team and this team. They are as follows:

2015 record (end of regular season): 19-12

2017 record (end of regular season): 19-12

2015 conference record: 9-9

2017 conference record: 9-9

2015 final conference game: A road game against the team with the worst record in the Big East (Creighton). The win extended Xavier’s streak of finishing .500 or better in conference.

2017 final conference game: A road game against the team with the worst record in the Big East (DePaul). The win extended Xavier’s streak of finishing .500 or better in conference.

2017 Big East Tournament Record: 2-1

2015: CBS announced Xavier in the last pairing (X was the 6 seed).

2017: CBS announces Xavier as their final team during the selection show (X is an 11 seed playing the 6; a switch from 2015).

2015 NCAA Tournament Region: West

2017 NCAA Tournament Region: West

2015: State where X played their first and second round games – Florida (Jacksonville)

2017: State where X played their first and second round games – Florida (Orlando)

2015 West Region State: California

2017 West Region State: California

2015: 2-seed in Xavier’s Region (and eventual Sweet 16 matchup)- Arizona (Coached by former Xavier head coach Sean Miller)
